About gravel
Natural gravel is a mixture of rounded or irregular fragments created by weathering of different rocks. Its composition, hardness and abrasiveness vary by deposit.
Gravel may contain usable finished sizes together with sand, clay and oversize stone. Pre-screening before crushing can remove saleable material and reduce energy use and wear by sending only oversize to the crushers.
Recommended process
Vibrating feeder → Pre-screening → Crushing as required → Final screening → Washing → Finished fractions
The pre-screen removes fine and already usable material. Hard, abrasive oversize is normally processed with jaw and cone crushers; softer material may be treated with jaw and impact crushers. The final screen separates products, while washing reduces clay, dust and excess fines where required.
Recommended equipment
Vibrating feeder — controlled feeding
Pre-screen — bypass of usable fine fractions
Jaw crusher — primary crushing of oversize gravel
Cone crusher — hard and abrasive material
Impact crusher — softer material and particle shaping
Vibrating screen — accurate fraction separation
Sand washer — reduction of clay and excess fines
Belt conveyors — continuous transfer
Typical products
0–5 mm — natural or manufactured sand
5–10 mm — fine aggregate
10–20 mm — concrete and asphalt aggregate
20–40 mm — road base and general construction material
Important selection factors
Determine the particle-size distribution, maximum size, hardness, clay content and proportion of natural sand before selecting equipment. If washing is required, include water supply, settling ponds and water recycling in the project.
